There is no doubt that Australia has been a popular academic destination for students around the globe including for Filipinos. In fact, the number of international students in Australia hit 713,144 for the first time as of the 29th of February 2024, according to the latest quarterly statistics detailing temporary entrant visa holders released by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

To define in the simplest form, an Australian Student Visa allows foreign nationals to study at an eligible academic institution in Australia. It remains valid for the length of the course, up to a maximum of 5 years. There are many factors propelling the surge of international students applying for universities in Australia, including the wide spectrum of course choices, availability of scholarships and research fellowships, post-study work rights and work opportunities, and a multicultural society.
Indeed, the Australian education landscape is evolving, and it’s crucial to stay informed. Recently, the Department of Home Affairs has revised the immigration risk ratings of some countries, including the Philippines which is now categorized as a Level 3 Country. This means that interested Philippine passport holders applying for the Australian Student Visa are now required to provide evidence of English language ability and financial capacity.
These levels indicate the risk associated with applicants from specific countries applying for specific areas of education. Level 3 represents the highest immigration risk, level 2 a medium risk, and level 1 represents the lowest immigration risk in the assessment level hierarchy.
